This book is fantastic. If Police corruption or just police in general is your thing, than this book is for you!
Book Review: Haiku Book Reviews Summary: 5 Stars
Real cops, on duty
and off. But can they relax?
A fricking classic.
Book Review: Not My Favorite Wambaugh Summary: 4 Stars
I have read several of Joseph Wambaugh's books and have enjoyed them all. However, I liked "The Onion Field" and "Finnegan's Week" better than this one. There are enough characters in "The Choirboys" to make three novels. My local library did not have "The Choirboys" so I will donate this copy when finished with it.
Book Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
I laughed so hard it brought tears to my eyes. As a retired cop I can attest that the events depicted most likely did happen. It does not get any better.
Book Review: Simply a masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Everything good that has been said about this book is true. In fact, it can never have *enough* accolades heaped on it. I remember first reading 'The Choirboys' in the mid-to-late 80's, I was a Military Policeman at the time, and this book convinced me to NOT become a civilian police officer once I got out. And I'm glad I didn't. That's how powerful it was to me.
Fast-forward to years later: My wife and I were discussing the subject of what was some of our favorite books of all time. Remembering this one, I told her about it, and she (in secret) found it and ordered it for me, then surprised me with it. I was both shocked and pleased to see that you could still get this book, since it was written so long ago. (I had no idea it was such a popular book , since 'way back when' there was no such thing as the internet) And you know what? I liked it even better reading it the second time around. And the third, and the fourth...
This book will have even the most hardened cynic laughing hysterically in one chapter, and their eyes misting over in another. 'Roscoe Rules' in particular is one of those characters that you will never forget about until the day you die. As a matter of fact, it was his character that sparked my memory about reading this book some 20+ years earlier. How many books can leave such a lasting impression that they can make a claim like that? Not many.
Unless you have absolutely no sense of humor, absolutely no compassion, absolutely no feelings of any kind, or you are the world's biggest 'nit-picker', you will LOVE this book.
