Book Review: A Good Read If You Can Buy the Premise

In comparison with other fantasy novels, "The Prestige" has a plot with some fantastical but largely plausible aspects in a conventional (if historical) setting. "American Gods" has totally fantastical plot elements but, again, a plausible setting. "The City & the City" has a plot that is a conventional noir mystery, but a setting that, although not in a fantastical venue, asks one to disavow credulity. Potentially it may be easier to accept a totally mythological setting than one that is contemporary but requires the characters to behave so contrary to human nature.
Having, said that, I think it is well worth your while to accept the premise and take the plunge. The prose is excellent, and the story consistently entertains. One other caveat. This is one of those Cormac McCarthy like books in which one starts blind and the nature of things slowly become clear through the action. Stick with it; it is worth it.
