Book Review: A must-read for anyone who is staying in Venice
Summary: 4 Stars
If you're going to stay in Venice for the 2nd or 3rd time or if you are interested beyond the main tourist attractions, this book is for you. John Berendt's journalistic style leads you through Venetian life where he explores some of the more private stories and controversial events in Venice. This book will introduce you to parts of Venice off the beaten track and help you understand the stories behind the scenes.
If you've ever wondered what happens in the palaces on the Grand Canal and who they belong to, look no further.
As Berendt meets and interviews many Venetians, it is easy to become confused between different people, Berendt acknowledges this by providing the reader with helpful descriptions, for example, Massimo Donadon aka. The Rat Man, and 'Captain' Mario Moro.
Although Berendt often meets and makes reference to the many Americans living or staying in Venice opposed to the Venetians, it does become apparently necessary in understanding what has happened behind what you see in Venice today.
Overall, this book is a very good read, and if you liked his bestselling book 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' this is strongly recommended reading.
