Book Reviews of The Coffin Quilt: The Feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys

Book Review: A great take on the most famous family fued!
Summary: 5 Stars

Coffin Quilt is the story of the Hatfield,McCoy fued told form the perspective of young Fanny McCoy. Ann Rinaldi is one of my favorite authors and this is one of my favorite of her books. Rinaldi tells it like it is, not felling the need to create a light-hearted character to lighten this deep story. Rinaldi stayed true to history and created a story you don't want to climb out of as you read through the sadness, murder and heartbreak. I would highly recommend this book to any teen interested in historical fiction. Though i would not suggest this to my little sister{age ten}, If you would prefer more light hearted historical fiction I would suggest some of Rinaldi's other books- A Ride into Morning or Finishing Becca.
Other recommended books would be- After the War~Carol Matas, Aquintance with Darkness~Ann Rinaldi,Nory Ryan's Song~ Patricia Reilly Giff.

Book Review: Suprisingly good
Summary: 4 Stars

I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was, since it was by an author that I had found to be intriguing, but unsatisfactory in the past. Her other book 'Amelia's War" had a good storyline yet didn't live up to it's potential. This book, however was intersesting, informative and insightful.
The story is seen from the eyes of seven year old Fanny McCoy, whose older sister "Ro" ran off with Johnse Hatfield, the sworn enemy of the McCoys. Some people say that the feud started when Devil Anse Hatfield stole the McCoy family's pigs and claimed they were his own. The matter went to court and the judge ruled in favor of the Hatfields. Others think it began when Ro ran off with Johnse.
Through many examples of hatred and violence this book show's how we shouldn't take vengence into our own hands, but leave it to the lord, who can dish out far greater punishments than we can and not end up with terrible consequences. In this story the hate forms a never ending circle going faster and faster until it spins out of control. At first it was just vandalism, then stealing, it kept escalating until they resorted to killing. One night, after three of the McCoys boys had been murdered by the Hatfields, the Hatfields came to the McCoys house and started to burn it. This act would force them to either come out and be shot to death, or stay inside and burn alive.Fanny's older sister,Alifair went outside to the well, in order to get water to put out the fire. On of the boys, Cap, warns her to return to the house or be shot. She retorts that she never burned their kitchen, why were they burning hers and would they really stoop so low as to kill the womenfolk? He never answered, he had no need to, because he had just pulled the trigger.
There is a lot of sadness in the story, a lot of hoplessness for both sides, it seemed as if it would never end, but eventually it did and the hatred was forgotten. Many of Fanny's loved ones died, but there was hope for the future generations. If someone in the beginning had had the strength to stand up for what was right and stopped the violence all of this wouldn't have happened, but because these men gave into their natural pride and instinctive sin countless lives were ruined or lost.

If you really like books that have family fueds, killing, and a little bit of drama...this is it! In my own perspective, I did not really like this book. The transitions in the book are slow. That is one thing I didn't really like; Everything in each chapter sounded alike. This is definitly not my type of book but it may be for you.

Book Review: This book is COOL!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

The Coffin Quilt has some very interesting points and gives a glimpse of the past of two families; The McCoys and The Hatfields. This book is very exciting and educational. I would recommend this book to anyone because this book is absolutely splendid. THIS BOOK IS COOL!!!

Book Review: The Coffin Quilt
Summary: 5 Stars

The Coffin Qult by Ann Rinaldi is a very exicting, action packed book. When I was reading it, I could not stop. With all of the killings and fights, how could you put it down. What really was weird, was that the family only came close when somone was real sick, or just died. It's knd of weird that your family can only get along when somone dies. The best part of the book was how the whole fued started and what the Hatefields did to show their point. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants a good action packed book.
