Fowles' tale of a butterfly collector who kidnaps a young art student is truly an astounding achievement in modern literature. Touching on themes of class distinction, the desire for understanding and the importance of experiencing life in all its fullness, it is the broken dreams and self discovery of the captive artist which are haunting and beautiful in equal measure. Mesmerising.
