Book Reviews of The Collectors

Book Review: A Bit of a Thin Plot
Summary: 3 Stars

Unfortunately this book is not Baldacci's best effort. The plot is not terribly well supported and is unbelievable.
Yawn.

Book Review: A new member of the Club
Summary: 4 Stars

The chief elements of this addition to the Camel Club series are the addition of an interesting new member and the obviously hanging ending which begs for a follow up book. That book already exists so newcomers to this series don't need to wait for the author to get a new idea, write it down or the publisher to get it into print.

In some ways, this book leaves a bit of a jagged edge to the old book tending to ignore main characters from the first in the series due to having to make room for a major new character. No fear, most of the old players return for volume three making the three initial books of this series more of a triptych or trilogy, if you will, than just three books with a similar set of actors.

Of the initial three, this book is probably the weakest relying on a rapid wrap up almost a deus de machina sort of finale than a well played out finale, yet it's not so far out (given the series is pretty far out there) that it makes for an eye roll.

The one jarring note for some must be that one of the main characters is a confidence player. Now in fiction for some reason, these are heroes but in real life they aren't. Here the only con is against a person who is portrayed as 'deserving it', but along the way, this supposed hero has cheated old folks and other vulnerable. Why the thief in fiction is so well regarded is, to me, a complete bafflement.

Book Review: Amateurish narrative and on-the-nose dialogue.
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the first Baldacci novel I've read, and I have to say I was surprised by the ham-handed narrative and dialogue. Every plot twist had to be immediately (and sometimes repeatedly) summarized and explained as if readers are incapable of making intelligent inferences. It was more like having someone retell a novel than reading it yourself. The plot was not as tight as I would expect from a NYT best selling author, but good execution can compensate for a pedestrian plot. This book lacked in both areas.

Book Review: Another Great read.
Summary: 5 Stars

The Collectors, is fast paced, very engaging and up to the usual suspense of David Baldacci. This is a good one, go for it.

Book Review: Another Page Turner
Summary: 4 Stars

Say what you will about David Baldacci, he continues to be one of the most consistant authors in America today. Occasionally he flirts with greatness as he did with his first three books. Occasionally he veers off the tracks as he did with Simple Genius. For the most part though, he writes good page turners that pass a flight with ease.

That is exactly what he does with The Collectors, the entertaining sequel to "The Camel Club." Once again, the Camel Club finds itself at teh center of a conspiracy to sell intelligence secrets to foreign governments and terrorist organizations.

Like many of Baldacci's villians, Roger Seagraves is an entertaining character, though he is upstaged by nasty casino owner Jerry Bagger who will apparently continue to play a role in the future Camel Club books.

Con artist Annabelle Conroy joins the Camel Club in this adventure and her story line is one of Baldacci's most entertaining in years.

It isn't a perfect book by any stretch, but it is entertaining and that is all anyone could ever want from Baldacci.
