Book Reviews of The CollectorsBook Review: Baldacci delivers again. Summary: 5 Stars
Synopsis
The assassination of the U.S. Speaker of the House has shaken the nation. And the Camel Club has found a chilling connection with another death: the body of the director of the Library of Congress's rare books room has been found in a locked vault.
The Camel Club's unofficial leader, a man who calls himself Oliver Stone, discovers that someone is selling America to its enemies one classified secret at a time. Then Annabelle Conroy, the greatest con artist of her generation, struts her way into the club and gives it a sexy new edge -- one it needs. Because the two murders are hurtling the Camel Club into a world of espionage that can bring America to its knees.
My Two Cents Worth
In this, the second installment of the Camel Club series, Baldacci raises the stakes on the rag-tag characters of the underdog whistle blowers. The spies are more devious and dangerous, the corruption more widespread, and the action is more suspenseful. The author takes behind the scenes of some ingenious con games and provides some incredible insight into the mind of Annabelle, who is a high-stakes gambler on a roll.
I particularly appreciate the character development in this series. It is rare I get such a clear and vivid picture of each character as I read that I "cast" each role from the Hollywood "A" list, but I would love to be the director and cast Tom Selleck as Stone, Sandra Bullock as Annabelle, David Hyde Pierce as Caleb, and Tommy Lee Jones as Seagraves.
The Collectors did not disappoint - the pace of the action was brisk and the suspense was palpable.
If you are looking for a book that is a no doubt, slam-dunk, satisfaction guaranteed, five-star winner, pick up a Baldacci. He delivers.
Book Review: Camel Club Gang + 1 Summary: 5 Stars
I grow a little weary of reviews that are so "nit-picky" as to think that a "book", a "story" is supposed to be a documentary. They state - "couldn't happen that way, not real, too hoky". I say - get over yourselves. A book is "entertainment". Something to take you into another realm and out of your little life. Baldacci, Berry and Rollins all do that in a respectible way. This is the Camel Club plus one and is fast paced, interesting, part true of our hypocritical government and thoroughly entertaining. A good read, as always. Just enjoy and stop looking for "real life".
Book Review: Camel Club Series Summary: 4 Stars
Its fine for his Camel Club series. Not his best book ever but a good read.
Book Review: Con artists, assassins, rare book collectors, and the Camel Club Summary: 4 Stars
This is not the best novel on the market, but it was entertaining and held my interest. It is really two plots which come together through one of the main characters. Annabelle Conroy is a con artist out to make a big score by conning an evil man from her past (this is somewhat like "The Sting," but not quite as good). You do learn a lot about con games, from Three Card Monte to counterfeit ATM cards, to stolen and altered checks, to pulling chips at casinos, to Internet wire fraud. It can make a person cautious, and explain why casinos have high levels of security. Just don't try this on someone like Jerry Bagger - he may break your kneecaps if he doesn't kill you.
The second plot links Annabelle to the Camel Club as they become involved in espionage - people are selling intelligence secrets to bad guys in other countries. I thought this plot was a little off the wall at times, but who knows - sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. You will learn a lot about rare books and the obsessions of some collectors. The story does have a lot of action and violence, including some torture.
The novel does not come to a complete end as an evil person is still trying to track down Annabelle.
Book Review: Dan Baldacci a great storyteller!! Summary: 5 Stars
The "Collectors" is the follow up to Baldacci's "The Camel Club" which was the first book that I had ever read by Dan Baldacci and only ordered it because of the strange title. However "The Camel Club" opened a door to a return for me to real reading like I had not done in years."The Collectors" delves even deeper into the main characters of the "The Camel Club" and incorporates an excellent plot with plenty of twists and turns.I was able to plow thru this book in only a few days which is very fast for a slow reader like me.Baldacci's research of his background material is excellent.Books like these need to be made into movies.
