Book Reviews of The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Revised)

Book Review: If you are buying 1 book on preg/childbirth, buy this one.
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a nurse-midwife and I recommend this book to all of my patients. Wonderful informaton regarding pregnancy and childbirth. Answers all of the most commonly asked questions of the expected mother. The photographs are wonderful. I often give this book as a gift to friends expecting their first baby.

Book Review: Very informative and reassuring
Summary: 4 Stars

I really liked this book. I thought it was much better than What to Expect When You're Expecting. It has all the same information, but it won't make you feel like every little thing you do during pregnancy will harm your baby.

She speaks out very strongly that hospitals and doctors ought to take the patients needs into account above and beyond anything else. I agree with that, but you still need to listen to your doctor! You do have to think for yourself. There is a section on gestational diabetes, and she thinks that the tests for it are intrusive, and that they don't do much good. I don't think diabetes is something you should fool around with, period, and that the tests for it are a good idea.

She gives a lot of options for birth, most of which hadn't occured to me, like a water birth. She encourages you to speak up if something is going on that you don't like during your pregnancy or birth. She encourages fathers to get involved, but realizes that not everyone has a faithful partner. There is helpful information on ways to get ready for giving birth, and useful ideas for recovering in the postpartum period. Read this book with an open mind, though. Some of the ideas do seem radical. The message I like the best in this book is that the woman should do what is right for her, not what is right for the doctor or hospital.

Book Review: A childbirth book for women who hate men
Summary: 2 Stars

If you're a shouting feminist and single mother-to-be, you'll probably enjoy this book. If, however, you aren't, then read "What to Expect When You're Expecting" instead of this screed. Kitzinger can't seem to help editorializing about the supposed past degradation of women in childbirth, all at the hands of men. The commentary was both insulting and irrelevant. Beyond that, the book is nothing more--or less--than your run-of-the-mill informative book on childbrith.

Book Review: The best first time Mom-to-be book you'll ever need to read!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is the most complete book I have found on pregnancy and childbirth. It is updated for the the 90's and has very useful and easy-to-read information. The photographs and diagrams are quite graphic and wonderful for any first time mom-to-be! Ms. Kitzinger is the best in the business!

Book Review: Unbiased information to make your own decisions
Summary: 5 Stars

Sheila Kitzinger, a well-known home-birth advocate and author of many excellent books, has written this comprehensive guide in a way that informs the reader about the typical medical tests, procedures, interventions and explains their purposes and the situations in which may be most beneficial for those who choose them. The individuality of each pregnancy is acknowledged and respected, and no judgements are made or implied regarding the use of tests, epidurals, artificial induction, etc., other than to simply describe what they are and how and when they are generally used. It is nice to read about natural births, home births, bonding time, etc., without all of the cold medical warnings and threats for a change.
