Book Review: Do not be confused...
Summary: 4 Stars

I knew exactly what book I was getting when I ordered this. After reading some of the reviews, I was a little apprehensive. All in all, for the price, it's a good book. HOWEVER, the stories are more summaries of the stories than the actual full-length stories. If you're buying this book thinking you're going to be getting 8+ pages per story, you're wrong. Most stories average 2-3 pages in length and are VERY quick reads.

It's a good book to keep you entertained. It is an adults' fairy tale book though due to the graphic (and original) nature of the tales.

Book Review: A pleasant surprise!
Summary: 4 Stars

My sister-in-law, a veteran first-grade teacher, recommended this to read to my 7-year old. She has read from this book to her classes for years.

There are many familiar stories in here, but the original versions may not be what you expect. In fact, as a parent I'm finding that's half the fun! I have even continued to read stories myself long after my son is asleep. Many of them are quite bizarre, and don't always follow the expected format.

My 7-year old absolutely loves this book, and since we bought it 2 months ago, we read from it every night we read together. With over 200 stories, we'll be at it for awhile. He follows the stories with wonder, his eyes large as saucers, fingers in his mouth, squealing with excitement at the bizarre tapestry of characters and their tribulations.

So, 4 stars instead of 5 because there are some stories that are real clunkers, where you read them and end up scratching your head going, "Huh?" But the others are worth it!

And a warning: These are not the Disneyfied versions--heads get chopped off and put on poles, parents die, zombies and corpses appear. My 7-year old does not find any of this upsetting, it all rather fits in with the stories quite well. Lessons are learned, stupid children redeem themselves, and evil kings get their just desserts.

Book Review: Ok but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

I liked this book, but it doesn't have nearly as many illustrations as I thought it would (the book was advertised as being "fully illustrated.")

Secondly, there are some fairy tales that I was sure this book would have but it doesn't. However this book does have lots of fairy tales.

So I do recommend this book.

Book Review: get a better edition than this one

type smudges / translation bad / in short, a disposable book

Book Review: bad, bad, bad
Summary: 1 Stars

Who published these weak translations? Yup, they are on newsprint and get smudged immediately. How about using real paper? B&N needs to stop thinking opportunistically and start thinking about quality.
