I remember ten years ago reading old newspapers and coming across this humorous, charming and (unusually) intelligent comic strip. After finding more issues I began to enjoy Calvin and Hobbes; little did I know that several years prior Bill Watterson had already concluded this brilliant series. Then in 2005 I discovered he had published a complete works of the famous boy and tiger.
Calvin's 6-year old hyperactivity and vivid imagination together with his best friend a stuffed tiger toy is an incredible combination; Hobbes himself, who appears real only to Calvin, is in a sense a projection of the boy's own consciousness and inner maturity. This is why they're so inseparable, and their crazy antics and misadventures in life are especially hilarious.
These 3 huge volumes made me laugh a lot which is fairly unique thing for a comic to do, my only disappointment is in the title itself "Complete Calvin and Hobbes" - I wish Bill Watterson was still sketching the loveable duo to this day. My younger sister now reads them too; it appeals to people of all ages so this collection is a must-have!

This not only is the ultimate collection of his works - it is beautifully bound as well and will last forever. Because you will be reading it again and again!

Book Review: Excellent Gift for All Ages!

My son received this the first year it came out. He's 11 now. This STILL sits on his bedside table and he STILL reads the comics often. We had some of the other compilation books (still do) that we got before this came out, but this set is just such a beautiful presentation and the books look to be so high quality.
Actually, that's why I'm only giving this 4 stars instead of 5-- the books LOOK high quality, but they are only mediocre quality. The pages are thinner than average and the binding doesn't appear to be so strong. Still, though, the thinner pages probably kept the size of the collection a decent size and takes up less room on the shelf.
And, with the protective case and hardcover, they should last as long as one is careful. We've had this a couple of years now (I think) and it's in superb condition even though my son reads these frequently.
As for the material itself, I don't think one can ever really tire of Calvin and Hobbes. It's hysterical stuff and pretty politically incorrect (which I always find refreshing). It's laugh-out-loud funny and great for all ages.
