Book Reviews of The Complete History of Jack the RipperBook Review: It Doesn't get any better than this Summary: 5 StarsThe average review for this book is five stars. That is rare, but I understand why. I have read about 15 books on Jack the Ripper. There are a few really good books out there like Jack the Ripper A to Z, but if someone asked me what would be the best Ripper book, it would be this one. I would also buy it in Hardback if you can get it for a good price. If you have read this book and come to the conclusion that George Chapman has the best chance of being the Ripper ( which Sugden does a great job in giving only facts, not his personal opinion), I would then buy a copy of Alias Jack the Ripper
Book Review: Outstanding effort ! Summary: 5 StarsBy far, the most comprehensive, level-headed, and open-minded work I've read on the subject. Sudgen has done an unequalled job of sifting through the countless rumors, myths, and historical documents concerning Jack the Ripper to provide the amateur and expert, alike, with an unbiased view that sticks to the facts as closely as history will allow. The wealth, richness, and accuracy of information that Sudgen provides is truly astounding and I could not put the book down. And, unlike the recently published "Portrait of a Killer", Sudgen provides no simple solution, but an objective, unbiased look at the evidence and each of the prime suspects. Superb read.
Book Review: The premier book on the ripper crimes Summary: 5 StarsThere is no other book on this subject that can approach the quality of this one. Sugden, a trained historian, is meticulous and careful in his assessment of evidence. Instead of tiresomely fingering a suspect and then marshalling evidence in a biased fashion to convict him, Sugden dispassionately works through the evidence at hand before even turning to the consideration of possible suspects. This is the best book, by far, ever written on the ripper case. Do yourself a favor and forget Patricia Cornwell's awful book and read this one instead.
Book Review: Thoroughly satisfying read Summary: 5 StarsIf you only read one book on this most facinating subject let it this wonderful work. I have read several books on this topic, proposing to be the "final solution". This book digs very deep and exposes those said "solutions". I feel that a more well researched work on Jack the Ripper could not be possible. This book is, by far, the best that I have read on Jack the Ripper.
Book Review: very thorough reference on the Ripper murders Summary: 5 StarsSugden gives us one of the strongest detailed works on the Ripper (though I love Stephen Knight and believe he was close to the real solution before his death of Cancer, and appreciate the effort of Scotland Yard detective Donald Rumbelow - his analysis of the suspects undercut his work), this is a super reference work for Ripperologists or writers looking for period works to give the novels more details. He covers the various aspects of each murder, all the hoopla surrounding it such as the From Hell letter and Dear Boss, goes into the false leads. I really did not need his study of other ripper theories - but maybe some will appreciate is pondering on this. But all in all, a must for people look for more details on the Ripper case or writers wanting a feel for the period.
