With 'Mission Impossible 3' starring Tom Cruise on general release, now is the right time to take a look back at the television series which inspired it. Created by the late Bruce Geller, 'Mission: Impossible' chronicled the exploits of the I.M.F. ( Impossible Missions Force ), an elite squad of secret agents headed at first by Dan Briggs ( Steven Hill ), then Jim Phelps ( Peter Graves ). The show was enormously successful, running for 168 episodes across seven years. Ironically the show whose popularity was responsible for 'Mission' being made - 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' - was cancelled just as 'Mission' was hitting its stride. Published in the U.S.A. in 1991, this book is long and detailed, with chapters devoted to individual episodes and season-by-season breakdowns. Even the tape messages are included, along with a pair of spoof comic strips from 'Mad' magazine. White has done an excellent job of research, interviewing all the major cast and crew members. Interesting to see how Lucille Ball helped get the show on air, despite claiming not to understand it! There's also some useful material on the short-lived '80's revival. The only flaw here as far as I can see is the lack of a chapter on merchandising. Four tie-in paperbacks ( two by John Tiger, two by Max Walker ) were published, along with some comic-books. White doesn't mention these. Still, if you prefer the television series to the Tom Cruise movies ( and I don't blame you ) you'll find this worth your time and money.
