Book Review: Rare gems of piano music by great Russian composer

This collection contains some of the most finely polished gems written by the most outstanding, but underestimated and neglected Russian composer of the twentieth century. The entire piano solo works of Alexander Scriabin consist of this volume, together with the Complete Sonatas and the Mazurkas, Poemes, Impromptus and Other Works for Piano. All three volumes are published by Dover. The 24 Preludes Opus 11 contain many short works, of varying moods, each encapsulating one aspect of Scriabin's uniquely personal and deeply moving style. The great Russian piano virtuosos Vladimir Horowitz and Lazar Berman have made a few of these works familiar to us, especially the dramatic Etude Opus 8 No. 12 in D# minor. Opus 42 No 5 in C# minor is another masterpiece, one of a kind in the piano repertory, with its dramatic declamatory style, and floating melody. I have had this book for many years and it has remained in excellent condition. Like all Dover Music Books, it is well bound, lies flat, the music is well laid out and easy to read, and the pages do not discolour with age. I have returned to it time after time to explore its treasures, and so will everyone who buys it, from the reasonably accomplished amateur to the top professional musician.
