Book Review: A Shameless Hatchet Job

I was utterly appalled at Spignesi's relentless hatchet job against George Tulloch or shall I amend that to the late George Tulloch who I remembered as a soft-spoken individual who didn't have a mean or petty bone in his body. I certainly didn't recognize this flamboyant, money grubbing huckster portrayed by Spigneisi who sought only to profit off Titanic's artifacts and who only wanted to unceremoniously yank the Titanic up one piece at a time. The late George Tulloch was a good, decent man who sought to enlighten the world by bringing the Titanic to life once again through the very ordinary things Titanic's passengers and crew casually used on a daily basis. This isn't grave robbing or plundering--if it was than there would be no museums open to educate people about the ways our ancestors lived, worked and died. George sacrificed a great deal to make his dreams a reality and I think the last third of Spignesi's book was stupid and cruel beyond belief. As a Titanic researcher myself, I am also sick and tired of Bob Ballard's saint act--it's worn thin. Bob Ballard has also profited off the Titanic through books and lectures and yet gets a free pass because he has an eternal halo over his head.
Spignesi's book sounded so promising and became so very disappointing thanks to his well-orchestrated smear campaign against the late George Tulloch who, sadly, lost his battle with cancer in January, 2004.
