Book Reviews of The Condemnations of the Reformation Era: Do They Still Divide?

Book Review: Intelligently Bridging the Gap between Protestants and Catholics
Summary: 5 Stars

This book takes a decidedly scholarly approach to Catholic-Protestant differences, particularly Catholic-Lutheran ones. It rejects the premise that theological differences are either passé or necessarily irreconcilable.

One prominent theme of this text is that Protestants and Catholics have often misunderstood, and caricatured, each others' positions. Moreover, Catholics and Protestants weren't as far apart on certain issues, as it seemed, even in the 16th century (e. g., p. 79, 114).

Certain theological differences can be seen as different sides of the same coin. For instance, consider the doctrine of justification. Both "forensic" and "effective" justification have Biblical foundation. The reality of infused grace can be affirmed simultaneously with the fact that the person is still a sinner (simul iustus et peccator).

Some theological differences can be reconciled through reinterpretation. For instance, the Lutheran doctrine of consubstantiation does not have to be at odds with the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation if the former simply means that the bread and wine continue to exist unaltered in the physical and chemical sense (p. 99).

What about the Mass as a sacrifice? The Eucharist in no sense should be seen as a meritorious work that adds to the Cross (p. 112). However, the Eucharist should also not be seen exclusively in terms of trans-signification or other forms of symbolism (p. 201).
