Have you ever read a book that is so full of "life" that you feel as if you are in the story, watching the plot unfold? The book, "The Contender", is just that type. In the beginning of the book, the main character, Alfred Brooks, is a high-school dropout that works at the local grocery store. As the story proceeds, Alfred becomes a "true blue boxing fighter". "The Contender" was full of twists and turns, which is what made the book such a page-turner. Robert Lipsyte proved to Alfred and to readers that if you put your mind to what you are doing, your heart will follow, and you will succeed.
