Book Review: A book that you can not put down. Summary: 5 Stars
The Contender by Robert Lipsyte is an amazing book. The story involves a teenager named Alfred Brooks who is having a tough time in his life. His friend is addicted to drugs, he is a high school dropout, and he has a dead-end grocery store job. So, he decides to enter the world of boxing. He makes friends, learns great lessons, and makes his life a little better. The book is fantastically written and the character study is outstanding. The way Lipsyte develops Alfred is writing at its best(at least for me I'm only twelve). If you ever see this book in the library, bookstore or at school, check it out or buy it right away. I loved it and i think anyone else will.
Book Review: A good book Summary: 4 Stars
This book is very good but the beginning and end is not that good. Once you get into it, people like it. That's probably why people cannot get into the book because the beginning is not very good. It is bad enough the start is bad, the end is horrible. They just cut off. It is talking about how Alfred will help James and then it ends. There is no outcome or anything. The middle part of the story is very good. It is about how Alfred is succeeding in his life. This story is in the time period of the 70's.
Book Review: A gripping story about a boy who learns to be a contender Summary: 4 Stars
This book shows the more serious side of life, and dramatically portrays how a young man overcomes many hardships--really how he trains his mind to think like a "real man" would. The story is written with a style that reveals how the young man thinks, as well as what his personality is like. It really touched my heart and left a deep impression there.
