Book Reviews of The ContenderBook Review: An excellent piece of literary work! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is wonderful. You really are Alfred, you become him, you share feelings with him. Robert Lipsyte, with boxing commentary experience, writes almost as if he was a boxer once. It has a superb ending, a great book for any age, adult or child, one of the best books I have ever read.
Book Review: Are you a contender? -review by Michelle Summary: 4 Stars
"Everybody wants to be a champion. That's not enough. You have to start by wanting to be a contender..." - Donatelli. In growing up, you make decisions that affect your future and identity. Alfred Brooks, the protagonist in The Contender, is faced with many choices he has to make. Major, the antagonist, tries to persuade Alfred to make the wrong decisions. Throughout the book, Alfred meets several people that help him discover his true identity. Alfred also learns that you have to set goals and not give up on yourself. I enjoyed reading this book because it was fast-paced. But I didn't like the fact that it was mainly about boxing, which isn't my favorite sport. As an overall, though, I felt that The Contender was a well-written and motivating book!
Book Review: Best book ever! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is great for teenagers every where. This book is great for kids to learn not to do drugs and drink achool. Alfred is the main charater in this book. He has a best friends James who always gets in trouble and does drugs. Alfred over comes all of it. I hope this book all the schools make sure that students well read this.
Book Review: Best seller ''Contender'' Summary: 5 Stars
If you are in to violent action packed books then this is the book for you. It is about a young boy named Alfred Brooks. His mom died and his father left him. Now he lives with his aunt Pearl and he is trying to help out by working at the grocery store. Things suddenly takes a slope down hill. I'm not going to tell the rest but I definetly suggest this book to anybody willing to read it. This book teaches how hard life was for a young African American in that area at that time. The time was in the sixteys, and he lived in Harlom, and it dosent help if your mom and dad, and you dont even know yoour dad. If you read this book I promise that you will hear a new peropect on life.
Book Review: CONTENDER Summary: 1 Stars
Contender was not my favorite book. The reason I didn't likeit is because I thought it was stupid. If there had been moreaction it would have got my interest a little better. Like if Alfred would have beat one of his opponents so bad that he had to go the hospital. Personally I thought the book was stupid.
