Book Reviews of The ContenderBook Review: Champion or Bust Summary: 4 Stars
The Contender is a good novel for people who like sports and like to read. I gave this book four stars because it had an awsesome plot. It also was very detailed. Also, I liked how the book ended. The Contender is about a dropout student named Alfred Brooks that lives in the suburbs of Harlem, New York.
He is trying to support his aunt and himself, but his druggy friend keeps on taking his money. Then, he started to box and work out at a gym called Donatelli's Gym, so he would be ready to box in an amatuer boxing tournament. Now you have to get the book to read the rest of the book. I just think the book, "The Contender" is an all around good book.
Book Review: Contender Summary: 5 Stars
The contender is about a young teenager who is hanging with the wrong friends, and is going through some tough times. He gets chased and haunted down by some guys that used to be very close friends with him and now they want him for a severe reason. He seems to be scared and he wants to fight for his life, so now he tries out to be a Contender or a boxer. Through reading the book, I was not sure if I was going to like it, especially in the beginning. By the time I was almost done with the book, I like it more. Anybody, who is likes boxing or does box, I recommend you read this book
Book Review: Contender Summary: 4 Stars
I thought this book was great! At first I thought it was going to be really boring, but after I read more, I really got into it! I liked how Alfred never guit at being a contender. I also thought it was really cool to have Henry helping him the whole time and how Mr. Donitelli helped too. I think most people can relate to everything that Alfred does, like the struggles he has to overcome and how it teaches us about using drugs and trying to be the best you can be at anything you do! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be the best they can be!
Book Review: Contender - Climbing The Ladder of Life Summary: 4 Stars
Alfred Brooks, a yound African-American in the dirty, filthy neighborhood of Harlem, New York. He works for a white man and his wife at a grocery store. He doesn't have much respect for himself, and needless to say for others. He is a high school dropout with a rather crummy life style. This is true until one day when he builds up the nerve to go to Donatelli's Gym to become a first class boxer. The owner, Mr. Donatelli, doesn't really want to train him at first. He had his doubts at first but then decided to train Alfred. I'm not going to spoil it for you, so if you're interested... GET THE BOOK.I rated this four stars, because it has a first class story line even though a couple of parts of the book fall a bit flat. All in all, I think it's obvious that this is a must read.
Book Review: Contender Review Summary: 3 Stars
I thought The Contender was a spectacular book. It first had me thinking it was terrible at the beginning. It started slow and boring. It talked about the city and described it briefly. But then the author came back with a chain of strong points. He had strong discriptive words that helped me visualive the author's thoughts. I almost felt as if I was right in the action. Watching from the stands at Alfred. He taught me about Harlem harsness, and also about the life of a black boy named Alfred during segregation. It told me about Alfred's experiences and punishments of his choices. The author made a strong point towards the mid-end. He told me about how it wasn't about being a contender in boxing, but rather the contender of life. How Alfred should try to be the winner of life. He taught me about the value of lifes and friends. He also taught me about the value of good friends who will stand up for you and help you in your times of need. Overall this book was excellent except the end and the beginning. It didn't have a strong end. It got off subject. It talked to much about friends and Alfred trying to be a good friend. But, the author left you hanging. This book was set up for a sequal. I think and hope there'll be a sequal. I'm hoping to see it in stores, so my class or I can read it.
