Book Reviews of The ContenderBook Review: Five stars, no question Summary: 5 Stars
Along with The Outsiders, this is the best adolescent-oriented book I have ever read. Come on, detractors. Youth should be a time of hope, passion, honesty and dreams. It gets a lot harder to hang on to those things later (and sooner than you think) when the conformists outnumber the eagles. This book presents a kid fighting to survive, trying to use his brain and his heart to make his life better. It doesn't get much better than that. Cherish your youth, and read this book--it will reflect and encourage the best of your feelings.
Book Review: Friendship and to never give up Summary: 4 Stars
I felt that the story was great. I think it could have been even better if they ended the story differently. They might have put in what happened to Alfred: did he ever stay with boxing? They should have told us what happened to James: did he come over his drug problem? I think that anybody that likes a story with real problems with every day life will like this novel. The book takes place in Harlem, New York. The book's main character Alfred Brooks is faced with many challenges and how he came over them. His friend,James, has a drug problem but they never say what happens to him at the end. The book is about Alfred trying to overcome obstacles in his life and the changes boxing has on his life. For me the peek of the story was when Alfred has to box Elston Hubbard and before the match begins he is told that it will be his last fight. Yes, I believe that the book is believable. The book was pretty fast paced. The book is for about 3 year olds and up.
Book Review: Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
The Contender is a book of roller coaster emotions, excitement and suspense. This is a book that tells the story of a boy who goes through life halfway and doesn't have high self esteem. Later, boxing turns his life around. He gains the self esteem that he needs, stands up to bullies, and helps his friend when his friend ditched him. This is a really great book. You have to read it!
Book Review: Great Book!! Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutly loved this book. One of the reasons i like this book so much is because it could really happen. Another thing is, it relates more to kids these days. The book is about a boy named Alfred. Alfred learns to deal with drugs early in the book. Then one day his friend asks him to help him rob the store that he works at. He said no, and his friend got caught. He felt really guilty about it so he joined a boxing club. He learnded how to box and became a contender in the ring. I seriously suggest reading this book. It's a more "down to earth" than other books that i have read.
Book Review: Great Book!! Summary: 4 Stars
This story is about a teenager named Alfred Brooks, and in the book he is simply trying to make a life for himself. He dropped out of High School, and he's working at a grocery store. To make things even worse, his friend is turning to drugs and he is getting harassed by a group of guys. Alfred decides to go to Donatelli's gym, because he wants to become a champion, a boxer.
My english class read this book, and I enjoyed it. I think you should read the book, and maybe it'll make you think about reaching the goals of becoming a champion.
