This story covered a lot of territory in just 200 pages. It is about two families, yet there are many other extended people that belong to this story.
It begins when Matt goes in search of a cradle for his 8 month pregnant wife, Marissa. The cradle was stolen from her home(by her mother) when she was 15, just a week after her mother walked out on her and her father. She wants nothing to do with her mother but does want the cradle for their new baby.
History: Matt was an orphan, abandoned to foster care when he was a baby, yet he feels he has left that all behind him.
There is another story brewing about a woman, Renee, and her husband, Bill, sending their son off to Iraq. She is an author of childrens books.
She also has a secret she is about to tell her husband.
Matt and his quest for this cradle takes him all over the midwest with surprising discoveries that will eventually tie into Renee's story. It is so heartwrenching yet heartwarming at the same time.
It is a small novel that packs a big punch. I only wish for maybe a different ending yet it wouldn't have been as realistic, I'm sure. It was maybe a bit predictable but a lovely story with magical writing by this author.
