Book Review: Masterful example of how to surprise 'em when they know you're coming
Summary: 4 Stars
After a series of dismal performances in the Arab-Israeli wars leading up to the 1973 conflict the Egyptians managed a brilliant tactical surprise and crossed the Suez with minimal losses. The author's argument that the value of that tactical surprise was frittered away by Sadat's meddling is arguable. What cannot be argued is the first-class staff work and coordination of special operations to achieve all objectives.
The success of the operation exposed the shortcomings of warfare as practiced by the Egyptians however. Apparently there was no plan in place for exploiting the breakthrough. The author, though personally involved, is reasonably objective. In any case, the book is a cracking good telling of an operation that will long be studied by historians and military professionals alike.
