Book Review: "coyote" means trickster in some cultures

When was the last time you looked deeply into an animal's eyes? I just finished reading "The Daily Coyote". Stockton has a blog called the dailycoyote.net which she started after sending daily pictures of her baby coyote to friends and relatives by email. They loved it. Soon, she started a blog where she posted the pictures and people could subscribe to receive a dose of daily coyote. Then she got a book contract and wrote a book about her first year of raising a wild coyote.
I had wanted to read this book for a while but didn't think I would love it because it is about a captive animal. So, I ordered a copy from the library and had almost forgotten about it when a copy came to me in the mail. It is a page turner and even though Shreve lives in Wyoming ranch country and has a wildlife services boyfriend who kills coyotes for a living, this story of a baby coyote and Shreve goes beyond politics and what people think is right. The coyote makes it clear as he grows to adulthood that there is an order that belongs in the world that humans just don't understand. Respect is earned by honesty and self-reliance. Anything else is not tolerated. Charlie the coyote arranges his world so he can thrive without being wild. Shreve must keep him for his lifetime, as there is no going back on the decision she made when he was a baby.
Charlie the coyote has no problem communicating with people because he has the patience to wait until they look deep into his eyes. He will keep working at it until we "get" it. Fortunately, Shreve as his caretaker, is also an excellent photographer and Charlie will be able to communicate in his way with large groups of people. When it comes to animals, the fact that we need words to communicate is only a barrier as far as they are concerned. Shreve Stockton manages, however, to find the words to bring Charlie to us in this book.
