Book Reviews of The Definitive Book of Body LanguageBook Review: The basics made clear Summary: 5 StarsI bought it because I had not a hope of interpreting other people's body language - it was a blind spot for me.
The book does what it claims to do. It explains why we use certain traits and how we do it, what to look for, what they mean. I found that it worked, I could observe people at work, social settings etc. and pick up things and interpret them - even found it quite fun. I use it in work too to my advantage. This week I explained what someone on TV was doing with their body language and even sounded like I knew what I was talking about - quite suprised myself!
A plus is that it explain WHY certain signals are made - which makes them easier to spot and interpret. Also it's written interestingly with a lively tone, helpful drawings, anecdotes and references to primates and primitive man to make it all fit together. Lots of photos of famous people and interpretations of their body language - very interesting!
It goes through body language methodically: hands, feet, face, arms, handshakes, head etc. which works well. I felt encouraged to use the knowledge in the real world. Lively, and encouraging, easy to read stuff.
A friend who could read the basics in people easily (as many people do) found this a bit of a case of stating the obvious. You may find this if you're quite an aware person, although I think almost everyone could gain something from this book.
If you're looking for a book because body language is not easy for you, there's no better starting point, I think. If you're looking for very advanced stuff, you may find you know all this already.
Book Review: Good foundation Summary: 5 StarsThis is a good book to give you a foundation in reading others body language. It also makes you very aware of the signals you are putting out as well. It has clear diagrams and text and plenty to interest all those new to the topic. This is a great place to start.
Book Review: The Definitive Book of Body Language Summary: 5 StarsA fascinating insight into all the gestures and movements we are already aware of, but may not realise their full meaning. Provides useful information to help understand others in every aspect of your life. It's made me see politicians, colleagues, friends, actors, flirts, etc in a much more illuminating light!
Book Review: I very fine book on the topic Summary: 4 StarsThere are lots and lots of books upon body language, a deluge of them followed in the wake of Big Brother and reality TV shows of that kind which are of little or no use to anyone who seriously needs to be aware of non-verbal communication.
I would recommend this book, it has clear illustrations and text, for any professionals working with people eager to improve and refine their knowledge of communication and communication skills.
It will for anyone improve their perceptiveness, if you which to improve your empathy and understand in social situations this is the book for you.
Book Review: Very accessible and easy to read Summary: 4 StarsI bought this book as a follow up to Allen Pease Body Language book. This appears to be a refresh and update of that orginal book. But more then that it now contains photos of actual people to allow a better understand of what is been explained. It also provides a lot more back ground and detail.
I regularly use and read other peoples body language and have found it to be a very useful skill. Plus it can be entertaining when sitting in an airport trying to 'read' your fellow passengers.
The end of the book contains a test to allow you to try your new found skills. I found this to be a bit odd, some the drawings are not very clear and it does not really take in to account the situational aspects of reading body language.
