Book Review: A good read, but Casey's selfish obsession ruined a great thing...

I really wanted to like this book, so I did - for the most part. I've been a big fan of sharks, whales and dolphins my whole life, so this book caught my eye right away. If you like sharks, you'll like most of this book. It's also an interesting history lesson on the Farallones Islands. I didn't want to repeat a whole lot of what others said, but it's too glaring too ignore. Like others have shared, due to Casey's selfish obsession to get back on the island at all costs, she ruined the Farallones Great White Shark Project.
Casey's inability to cope with the conditions she set for herself, her whining, her naiveness, her presumptions and total lack of respect for the power of the ocean caused the project's director to have to constantly bail her out time and again - ultimately leading to one major SNAFU which led directly to the project's demise. You can read more about that in the book.
The title is also a little misleading - "A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America's Great White Sharks" - I don't know whose survival Casey is referring to - because everyone but her seemed to be getting along just fine and she never appeared to be in any more danger than anyone else. The actual sightings of sharks in the book are sporadic and comprise less than half the book. The book begins promisingly but about halfway through, becomes more of Casey's diary whining about her plights - mostly imagined.
Despite all my above misgivings, I really enjoyed this book. Casey is a great writer. Her style is very readable, even page turning. She does justice to the sharks, the islands and the scientists who study them. They are the true heroes of this story.
While my review might have seemed a little harsh, I still really liked this book. I'd say three and a half stars, but there's no option for it.
For a real good read about a marine life project by someone actually directly involved in it - check out The Dolphin Chronicles. It's about bottlenose dolphins, not sharks though. It's my favorite marine life book thus far.
