Book Reviews of The Double Agents (Men at War)Book Review: From Bad to Worse Summary: 1 Stars
I found the first 4 books in this series to be exciting, well written, tight, thoroughly enjoyable. The 5th book apparently was co-authored by the son and it showed, although I would still rate book 5 worth a read. This book, however, is horrible - maybe written entirely by the son - loose, inane, run-on dialogue; choppy and incoherent; in many instances I found myself wondering what, exactly, was the point, and finally, in frustration, I sped-read the book, skipping over a vast number of pages just to get to the end. An utter disappointment - I own and have read and re-read all of the other books, all of the other series, but this one killed it for me - I will not buy another, period. Apparently I am not alone, and apparently we are looking at the end of an era. Too bad for fans of WEB Griffin.
Book Review: Good Solid Griffin! Summary: 4 Stars
Enjoyable continuation of the OSS saga. Look foward to the" next exciting chapter" as they used to say on the Saturday morning movie serials.
Book Review: Horrendous. Simply horrendous. Summary: 1 Stars
Wow.
I almost NEVER throw in the towel when reading a book, no matter how bad. Hey if I start, I want to see it through to the end.
But about 2/3 the way through the story was still struggling to find it's feet enough to actually get started. In the last 1/3 of the book there was simply no way the story could kick off, become engaging, and wrap up nicely. So I threw in the towel.
The dialogue is especially bad - long long drawn out conversations that are stiff beyond belief, sharing very little information with ther reader. You know within a few sentences what the next 15-20 pages are going to ramble about.
The book has the vibe of a term paper written by an uninspired high school student who has 2000 words to write, and only 500 on paper. Just because they stretch those 500 words to 2000 doesn't make for quality content.
This is an absolutely worthless book, that has tricked us into thinking it was written by a famous author, rather than a famous author's son. This is not meant to be rude or hateful - this is simply a realistic assessment.
Book Review: Horrible! Summary: 1 Stars
I usually love all of his books. However, this book is boring, boring, boring. I finally gave up about half way through. There is no "action" and the dialog is tedious. Good thing I borrowed it from the library.
Book Review: Huge Disappointment Summary: 2 Stars
This is the first negative review I've written, and I hate it to be Griffin's. I've loved every book he's written until now.
The plot is shallow, contrived, unfulfilling, and could have been so much better. It rambled for many chapters and the ending was disappointing and uninspiring. If I had read this book and someone suggested it was by Griffin, I would have bet any amount of money it was not.
Please, please read his other novels and don't spoil your opinion of such a fine author by this particular book. I hope this doesn't portend ill of the future for one of my favorite authors. Caveat Emptor!!
