Book Reviews of The Down Home Zombie BluesBook Review: "Aliens among Us" with More than One Twist Summary: 4 Stars
Commander Jorie Makkalah is a marine in the Guardian Force, a special unit sent to prevent the Tresh and their zombie-like creations from overrunning and conquering planets. One planet in particular is now their target--a small blue sphere named after dirt. Theo Petrakos is a homicide detective with the Bahia Vista, Florida police force. When he's called in after a mummified corpse is found, and the body turns out to be Jorie's contact on Earth, the two collide for a brief but frantic fight to save the planet. Theo finds himself aboard the Sakanah, Jorie's ship, being prepared to be transported to Paroo, a tropical planet where all who are sent who've been unfortunate to learn their planet has alien visitors. Intrigued and attracted to him, Jorie manages to convince her commanding officer to allow Theo to help in fighting the Tresh before he's transported, so Theo finds himself sent back to Earth with an implant meant to control--and kill him--if he disobeys orders. He also discovers he's just as attracted to Jorie as she is to him, but because he's just gotten out of a nightmare of a marriage, doesn't trust his feelings. Also, since Theo is a "nil," someone from a planet which has few--if any--inventions whose technology equals her own, Jorie believes he can't possibly to comprehend her mission. She's in for a profound awakening in that department as Theo not only comprehends but learns to use the weapons with surprising alacrity.
The dialogue is witty; Jorie's questions about Earth and customs (it's Christmas when she arrives) as she interacts with Theo's family (especially his aunt and her matchmaking friend) and colleagues, are contrasted with Theo's attempts to use his police skills in tracking down the Tresh threat and mastering alien technology. Their mutual attraction and struggle to fight it--because after the mission is completed, Theo is still going to be sent to Paroo--as well as their backgrounds as being losers in the Game of Love is highlighted enough to keep the sexual tension going. Jorie also has a personal stake in the invasion; she was once a prisoner of war of the Tresh and the man commanding this mission happens to be the same one who interrogated and tortured her. When Tamlynne, one of Jorie's comrades is captured and tortured, Theo is forced to ask his partner, Zeke, and Zeke's wife for help, and though Suzanne is a veterinarian, she rallies to aid the injured woman. This gains more of Jorie's cooperation, because--surprise!--on their world, doctors who treat companion animals are highly revered. Soon, Theo has recruited a small band from the police department, convinced them he isn't a nut-case, and readied them to fight the invasion. Adding to their number is the appearance of Kip Rordan, a drop-dead handsome hunk of a commander who doesn't have Jorie's empathy for nils, and is also after the captaincy she's been offered as reward for stopping the Tresh. The fact that he's secretly in love with Jorie and sees that Theo and his fellow marine are already committing to each other doesn't help. Jealousy rears its ugly head to complicate things as a brief minor triangle between Kip, Theo, and Jorie evolves.
This is a nice variation on the "aliens among us" theme. With 15-foot zombies, space troopers with a slightly superior attitude toward the "nils" of the invaded planet, and a group of Earthlings who refuse to shoot first and then ask questions later, The Down Home Zombie Blues is an enjoyable romance, a thrilling sci-fi tale, and an over-all entertaining book to read. It would be nice to have another book to see what Jorie and Theo do with their relationship following the settling of the astronomical dust at the end of the story.
