Book Review: one good turn

third in a series of fantasy novels from writer sharon shinn. The first in the trilogy is the safe keepers secret, then comes the truth tellers tale, and now this. but all the books stand on their own and you don't need to have read all of them to read this. It's a novel that runs for roughly 265 pages and it's set in a feudal fantasy style world where there are three kinds of special people:
safe keepers who keep secrets for people
truth tellers, who can only tell the truth
and dream makers, who can make people's wishes come true. dependent on how the magic they wield feels.
The book centres around kellen, a girl living in a small village who has been raised as a boy by her mother, who is convinced she was replaced by a changeling at birth. she befriends crippled boy gryffin, and the two grow up together learning about life in the process and making friends with other villagers and going through a few life changing experiences on the way.
When the kingdom needs a new dream maker one is chosen by the magic. but will their friendship endure after this?
Sharon shinn writes excellent characters whom you can really care for, and that's the case with this very readable book. Kellen finds that just maybe dreams come true not because of the magic, but because of the kindness of other people. And there are some good developments in the plot, especially one final twist that you won't see coming.
The prose is also supremely readable. this is marketed as a younger readers book but can be enjoyed by those of all ages. and you will, because it's another great read from a very good writer.
And if you enjoy this book, why not go out and do a good deed for someone? it will make you feel that way
