Jack Vance's 'The Dying Earth' is not a novel, but rather a series of loosely connected stories set in a far future Earth, where the Sun is red, scattered humans live on the detritus of past civilizations and magic is common.
When I first read this more than a decade ago I quite enjoyed it, as I had never read anything quite like it. Reading it again I am not quite as impressed. Still it is definitely a landmark achievement in fantasy, his ideas have been a big influence in the genre (including the 'cast and forget' magic system in Dungeons and Dragons). If you read it and much of it feels familiar remember Vance did it first more than 50 years ago.
