This book discusses not only the Church fathers, but also some non-canonical sources. For instance, the Gospel of Thomas is mentioned, including its account of the Boy Jesus making birds out of clay, clapping his hands, and thereby bringing them to life. There is also mention of the TRANSITUS MARIAE, and its account of the Virgin Mary being taken to heaven at the time of her death. Later, this became a dogma of the Roman Catholic Church: the Assumption of Mary.
The author Cross devotes some attention to manuscripts which may be forgeries, including the "Pfaff fragments". He contends that they are correctly attributed to Irenaeus. Elsewhere, the "Primacy" text has been used to support the existence of the office of the papacy in the early Church. Cross accepts its valid attribution to Cyprian.
