Book Reviews of The Elements of User Experience: User-Centered Design for the Web (VOICES)

Book Review: A Must-Read for Anyone Designing or Redesigning a Web Site
Summary: 5 Stars

I have bought over 20 copies of this book and given them away to colleagues. This is a practical guide to how to get it right. The process that Jesse outlines is not "rocket science" but he lays it out in a way that both designers and stakeholders can really understand it. It is also useful as a guide for a common vocabulary among vendors and clients. I keep a copy close at all times as I do Web strategy work.

Book Review: Too abstract?
Summary: 3 Stars

Perhaps the usefulness of the book will come to light this Semester as I study it as a prescribed text at Uni but so far (in five chapters) the lack of concrete examples and specifics leave me singularly unenlightened and, what's worse, uninspired. The theory seems plausible but at the end of each chapter I just yearn for a case study to illustrate it's value.

Book Review: user experience
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a really good book. Sometimes with texts of this type you can get really bogged down with the terminology and the theory of it and really lose sight of exactally what you are discussing. This book keeps it short and to the point. Its easy for a beginner to understand but not to simple that a more experienced designer gets bored. I would definately recommend it for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of design interfaces with the user experience in mind.

Book Review: Good review and explaination of a famous diagram
Summary: 4 Stars

In his book, he has taken his diagram and put words to it, while peppering it with some introduction to user experience development. Some of the negative reviews read that while Garrett gave explanations of his diagram, he had not really explained how to actually implement his practices enough and therefore could be reduced to theoretic rambling. However, to me, and the majority of readers, the point of the book seemed a bit obvious; Garrett has simply provided us with a tool or reference in the form of a diagram and has used the book to go into detail about the different aspects of it. Like the periodic table, the reader will most likely have to figure out how to use the elements himself. In any case, check it out if you haven't already.

Book Review: Should have read the reviews first
Summary: 2 Stars

Yes it touches on points that affect the user experience but it is so disjointed and abstract to be almost a hindrance.

Listen, the guy may have some good ideas and probably knows how to create an effective user-experience but this book should never have been written. You can't write an entire book on user experience based on a sketch you did in 1999.
