Book Review: A Right Riveting Read!

Scary people, them Kray brothers. I don't know what all the fuss was over their funerals. Good riddance, it would seem to me. This book dispels the commonly held view of the benevolent twins and highlights some of their lower moments. That the image of 'the boys' as 'East End heroes' is misguided and naive is convincingly expressed by author Martin Short and Albert Donoghue, the Kray's [one-time] right-hand-man. Some would say, that it serves Donoghue to portray the bruvvas as bad apples even now in order to maintain the image that helped him earn a reduced sentence, and thus maintain some credibility for himself after a lifetime of crime and punishment. However, the frankness of his self criticism and the accessibility of this book make you feel that Donoghue's revelations are, at the very least, honest opinions, and after all, he did serve a lengthy sentence, albeit shorter than the twins, on account of his association with the East End's most notorious duo. Frankly speaking, it's a right riveting read!
