Book Review: Interesting and very readable

Most engineering books, not surprisingly, deal with technology and how to apply it. Lienhard's book, on the other hand, looks at engineering in the context of society - how engineering effects human life as well as how politics and society affect engineering. One of the most interesting features of the book is the little nuggets of information that you stumble across while reading it: for example, he has some statistics which suggest that war does NOT fuel invention; or, the person you thought of as being responsible for the introduction of some bit of technology (such as the telephone) is not actually its inventor. In fact, on the subject, Lienhard makes much of the fact that few inventions are sole efforts, but are always created by groups of people - sometimes as teams, sometimes as individuals building on the success, and failure, of several others.All in all, a very interesting and well written book.
