Book Reviews of The Essential Rumi, New Expanded EditionBook Review: Hosokawa Fujitaka, "Farewell to the World", 1600 Summary: 5 Stars
"In the world that today remains unchanged from ancient times leaves that are words retain seeds in the human heart"
Book Review: In Awe... Summary: 5 Stars
This is simply one of the most important collections of poetry ever written. I am an English teacher who has read hundreds of books of poems, and The Essential Rumi is the only one that I had to read cover to cover (savored in about a month's time). Some "critics" say Coleman Barks has butchered the original Rumi. A translation though is more than just a word by word process of transferring language--especially in poetry where it is capturing the spirit and the passion in one's own tongue. These are brilliant poems regardless. How would Rumi feel about thousands of people reading and feeling him because of Coleman Barks' intimate and personal translations? Pleased. Elated. Because of earth shattering love and spirit present in almost every line. The other translations must be quite ordinary and plain since it took Barks and his vision and poetic talents to truly introduce Rumi to the masses. Don't be haters. Don't be so insecure. Or jealous. Or in denial. Just enjoy the extra attention and appreciation Rumi's getting...
Book Review: Instant Inspiration Summary: 5 Stars
As a great lover of spiritual and passionate poetry, I have yet to be disappointed by a single page of this book. It lives on the shelf beside my bed, where I read a poem from it first thing in the morning and again before I close my eyes at night. Sheer inspiration!
Book Review: Intiment knowledge of Human-Soul Summary: 5 Stars
Rumi expresses emotions of content and forever-happiness. Rumi translates that silence is true contentment, for when you are quit with yourself, you have no needs... your mind is empty and therefore satisfied... I have never appreciated any poet as much as I appreciated Rumi.
Book Review: Keep going back Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those books I keep handy, and just open randomly whenever I need a quick reminder that the world runs deeper than we think. It never fails to pull me from the shallow waters... When I want to go.
