An amazing new novel that cannot fail to hit a cord with today's modern audience. A Magdalene novel with a few surprising twists that is much different from today's choice of Magdalene fiction. This is predominately a time slip novel with most of the book set in the present day with flashbacks to a time two millennia previous and the religious turmoil's that engulfed the land. Mystery and intrigue are also thrown into this book creating an intense atmosphere that will leave you hard pressed to put the book down.
The journey of a lifetime awaits scholar, Maureen Paschal as she is drawn into a puzzle that spans two thousand years and the World. Contacted by the enigmatic, Berenger Sinclair she is drawn to the South of France with her cousin Father Peter Healy. Here they begin to discover the secret of their family, a secret so large it could redefine society today as we know it. As Maureen explores the beautiful Languedoc region of France and its Cathar history she learns more than she ever thought possible about one of histories most misunderstood women, Mary Magdalene. However a sinister organisation comes into play, one which, in the past has done and will do anything to stop the Magdalene Legacy. Once Maureen finds one of antiquities greatest treasures and the revelations begin to pour forth how will she cope with what lies ahead?
There are only a few main characters and this helps to keep the story moving. The first three quarters is quite fast paced with a couple of important scenes where you need to pay attention to what is going on. However this adds rather than subtracts to the mystery and excitement which drives this book forward. I particularly liked the last quarter of the book which focuses more on the historical side of the story bringing forth some interesting twists and turns that help to bring the novel into perspective. This helps to make the book more gripping which bring it to its final part. There are enemies lurking in the wings and whilst they are mostly in the background they are made to feel a real threat to our heroes.
Overall I would say that this is a great story with parts told in a unique and sometimes personal way. The details of the mysteries of the Cathar's and the Magdalene Legacy have been very well researched and this book looks like it was a labour of love which reflects onto its pages and makes for a beautiful and sometimes tense read. This is the sort of book that you will pick up and read again and again in years to come.
