This book is highly informative on all sorts of body ailments and gives us information such as the side effects that steroid eyedrops (used for treating inflamed eyes) can cause - such as cataracts or glaucoma. It makes you wonder if these medicines have such side effects on the eyes, what potential damage could it being doing on your other organs and the rest of your body? It is packed with useful information like this which your doctor is highly unlikely to tell you (if he even knows himself).

Dr Abel cannot stress enough the importance of the doctor-patient team which he refers to as 'Interactive Medicine'. Although primarily marketed as an 'eye' book (hence the name) this is so much more. There are specific chapters on cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, cornea transplants, the link between dry eyes and arthritis (amongt others) but each chapter is useful to read even if you don't suffer from these disorders because there is other information interlaced in the chapters - and anyway, who knows when a member of your family might develop one of these problems?

Dr Abel stresses the importance of many things by rewording them a couple of times for you to fully absorb the information. I usually find this tedious/patronising but I found this to be really helpful because he did it in such a way that it had the desired effect without being irritating/unnecessary. Not everything can be cured by herbs, vitamins, potions or even medication, but Dr Abel urges the reader not to put certain things down to 'old age' because many things we expect to come with old age are in fact avoidable/curable. He also emphasizes the importance of not just curing a symptom, to investigate the root of the problem and solve that, which will in turn cure the symptom.

All in all it's an invaluable, highly informative book - not exclusively useful to those with 'eye problems' either as he gives extensive advice on prevention via nutrition and supplementation (LOTS of vitamin/mineral advice).

....and he even gives a short appendix on 'eye aerobics'. Although he primarily cites the exercises as reducing eye strain and perhaps reducing the need for such strong glasses, if this really interests you then it might even inspire you to explore the world of vision improvement (aka The Bates Method, Natural Vision Improvement, Vision Therapy etc. - which is how I actually came to look at this book).

I cannot express how useful this book is!
