Book Review: Dishes ranged from complex, regional, and unusual to plain...with little in between

This is a beautiful cookbook and one that is needed with the exploding popularity in gourmet cooking AND cooking with food processors.
I personally enjoy both...I adore cooking gourmet meals for both dinner parties and family and I bought the best food processor I could find to make my life easier. Hence, I wanted something that would combine the two.
Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to like this book, and as much as I appreciate the author's diverse palatte, it seemed to be grouped into two categories...dishes that might appeal to a limited palatte but were gourmet (hence tough to use for family or a dinner party of varied tastes) or those so simple you'd already know 'em.
That's kind of a blanket statement though so I wanted to illustrate what I mean since your tastes may differ from mine and you may very well be looking for what this offers...in that case, I'd hate to steer you away...
a small sampling of the ones I thought would be to a limited palette/very regional:
chicken liver pate
gefelte fish ma maison
cutlet pojarsky
carrot loaf
carrot pirrakka with egg butter
russian meat pie
steak tartare
cabbage noodle casserole
red onion salad
taramasalata
turnip and potato puree
lamb en croute
poached trout with duxelles
roquefort profiteroles
vegetable knishes wrapped in phyllo leaves
gougere
fish stock
fish pudding
the ones I did like I already knew how to make and are very common:
refried beans
potato chips
lasagna
baked spaghetti
spinach salad
puree of peas
scalloped potatoes
potato pancakes
avocado dip
swedish meatballs
quesadillas
cream of mushroom soup
onion soup
broccoli soup
raw vegetable salad
I think the cookbook offers many new dishes and tastes you might never have heard of and that's not a bad thing...it just differed from what I personally was looking for which was a lush spread of things I could set out for friends and family and have EVERYONE ask for the recipe or leftovers! :-) It is, in this cook's opinion, geared to a more European palette than many of those I cook for might have...I'm all about the Food Network and new foods but raw steak and chicken livers and fish pudding wouldn't fare well for many I'd serve...(ppppsssst including myself!)
so I had to give this one away...
