Book Review: "The More Things Change, The More Things Stay The Same!"

This is an excellent book read on the fraudulant nature & hoaxes of "The Faith Healers", well presented by magician James Randi. The book may be 'old' : but one read/look on the book & the other look at today's Charismatic Televangelists' shows, they act as if they are copying the 'exposed fakes' like Oral Roberts, Leroy Jenkins, Peter Popoff, Pat Robertson, W. V. Grant, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim/Tae Bakker & many others. The script is exactly the same : (1) flashy suits, jewelery, expensive cars, mansions & millions of dollars from 'faithful' followers, (2) 'inspiring', well choreographed & well oiled TV preaching, (3) fundraising ploys of varying kinds (what James Randi calls 'selling snake oil', (4) promise of prosperity beyond measure (nothing is impossible with God) and (5) 'forever/perpertual' dependancy of followers on this Televangelists to maintain their lavish lifestyles (followers are discouraged to read 'the devil's work' : any newspapers, watch TV or read books other than theirs, hence the behaviour of or similar to a 'cult')! 'A Dateline (NBC)' investigation/expose' in 2002 had similar findings on the Ministries of Benny Hinn & his friend Reinardt Bonnke : they have no documented scrutiny/proof of the healings they claim on their followers & their expensive lifestyles are quite contradictory/contrary to what they claim they stand/represent for! Benny Hinn as for recently has been denied entry to Uk (Uk government suggests his church/religion is rather 'extreme' or 'cult' ), his wife for 30 years is divorcing him, citing his 4 years homosexual relationship as the reason & he has been denying his sexual relationship to another female companion (pastor Paula White) since their separation. As James Randi states, this book will be helpul to those who are suspicious of these faith healers & their dealings (what he calls those with type 3 faith) but not steadfast believers (those with types 1 & 2 faiths, for them no proof or scrutiny is needed/necessary as long as one 'believes', the so called 'blind faith'). Other Christians will love this book as it exposes the fallacy of 'Excess Prosperity Gospel' espoused by the charismatic Televangalists. Unfortunately, as James Randi suggests, our nature (culture/beliefs/religion), our vulnerability to various knocks of/in life (emotional problems/diseases) will render the 'status quo' to 'remain' for a very long time in the future! A highly recommended reading.
