Book Review: Good book, not what I was expecting, but turned out to be a fun read!

I received this book and was expecting your typical fantasy themed book. This book was recommended when talking about other authors similar to Robin Hobb I may like. Well, I was wrong. This book was not really a typical fantasy book. It was a much more dark tale about witchcraft, inquisitions, and cults. Normally not the kind of thing I would read.
However, I found the book fascinating and interesting to read. I got through it in a few days. I really liked the characters and their journey through the book. The story was definitely new.... never heard of something similar.
My only major gripe is the the author, at times, repeats himself. It's like when you are watching a serialized drama. After watching episode 1, episode 2 starts with a recap. Now, its not as bad in the book, but there were definitely times where he repeated the same thing a few times.
Other than that, I would pick up this book if you are looking for something a little darker and different. I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the rest in the series!
