Book Review: In the Beginning...
Summary: 5 Stars

The Grace children - nine-year-old twins, Simon and Jared, and their thirteen-year-old sister, Mallory - are as different as night and day, seeing as how Simon is busy with his menagerie of pets, Mallory practices her fencing 24/7, and Jared has been labeled a troublemaker. But each of the three children all agree on one thing when they arrive at their new home, the Spiderwick Estate - it's a dilapidated, old shack. But within a short time, the three children realize that the Spiderwick Estate is more than meets the eye. For it is home to various mythical creatures who are all after one very important thing - ARTHUR SPIDERWICK'S FIELD GUIDE TO THE FANTASTICAL WORLD AROUND YOU. A book which Jared is guarding with his life, and will not give up without a fight.

I actually read the last book in this series THE WRATH OF MULGARATH, before I read books 1-4, yet I still found that THE FIELD GUIDE held my attention, and intrigued me from page one. The Grace children are interesting and fun characters, and while they take part in the usual sibling rivalry, deep down, they are always there to help each other out. The prose and rhymes throughout the tale are delightful, while the magnificent illustrations truly bring the story to life. A story that makes the mythical world a reality, and leaves the reader begging for more.

Book Review: A fantastic draw
Summary: 5 Stars

I kept debating over The Spiderwick Chronicles for a long time - should I get them? Would they be worth it? After I spent two days reading all five, I wish I hadn't waited so long to get my hands on such an excellent series.

THE FIELD GUIDE opens out this five-part series incredibly well. We are presented with Jared Grace, an angry young boy whose father has left the family, and now the Graces are relocating to the ancient Spiderwick Estate. Jared, his twin brother Simon, Mallory, their older sister, and Mrs. Grace all find the old house a little creepy, but move in anyway. What ensues is a terrific romp into fantasy, secret libraries and books, and a mischievous mystery lurking around the Spiderwick mansion.

The writing is superb, really stepping up children's literature up a notch. The illustrations are breathtaking - from pictures of little boggarts to the entire Grace family.

There is only one objectionable word mentioned (cr*p), but other than this, THE FIELD GUIDE is highly recommended.
