Book Review: A practial helpful guide for teachers.

Using detailed plans and day by day timetables Paula Denton and Roxann Kriete guide teachers through the traumatic first six weeks at school. They emphasise the importance of setting expectations and creating a positive classroom atmosphere in the early days and the value which this has for later learning. Not only do the authors outline all the desired outcomes of the first six weeks of a new school year, they also offer very practical suggestions which can be adapted to any curriculum or school ethos. This book is specifically aimed at teachers of primary school children and is broken down into week by week programmes for the first, middle and final years of primary school. Although at times a little too gushy and enthusiastic the book provides a welcome dose of freshness into an area which is overrun by theory. The presentation and layout makes this a very user- friendly book for the harassed teacher.This is a book which will become a much loved resource each September.
