Book Reviews of The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (First Year, The)Book Review: A MUST-HAVE for Type-2ers!! Summary: 5 StarsI can't say enough how wonderful this book is! I wish I had known about it the first day I was diagnosed. I found a copy at my library when I was one month in from being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I began to devour the book. It's written in such a way that you don't get overwhelmed. It gives you things to laugh about, and shares the medical information in small chunks that you can skip if you're not in that place at that time. Gretchen is on the big diabetes email list that I recently joined (). She is a fabulous person as well as a fabulous writer. Rick Mendosa, the another ()celebrity, is on the email list as well. Visit .mendosa.com for his website. This book is really a wonderful overview for Type 2 diagnosis. Share it with your friends and family. Donate a copy to your public library. Spread the word.
Book Review: If you have Type II Diabetes, this is the book you want. Summary: 5 StarsThis book has finally replaced my old, tattered "The Diabetic's Book" by Biermann and Toohey. Becker has done a remarkable job of covering all the bases regarding Type II. I especially like her moderate, reasoned approach to controversial topics such as diet and the use of herbs. She deftly lists the pros and cons of various diets and medications and objectively serves the reader without jumping on trendy bandwagons. The author's understanding of the biological foundation of diabetes is impressive, but she also explains difficult material in an easy to understand manner. She has a great sense of humor (which never hurts if you have been diagnosed with diabetes), and obviously knows what it "feels" like to be a diabetic. If you are newly diagnosed, this is the book for you. If you need a comprehensive, well-written update, this is also the book for you. I haven't seen anything else that matches it.
Book Review: Not JUST for the NEWLY diagnosed! Summary: 5 StarsI have been dealing with my Type 2 diabetes for about 5 years and I recently ordered this book ..and I learned more from it than from anywhere since I was diagnosed. This is a clear, accurate, and extremely informative book. I go back and re read parts of it often and it has really made a big difference for me.. This is a disease that is difficult to understand correctly, even if you have had it a while, like I have. The up-to-date research behind this book is obvious and it is presented in a truly intelligent and articulate manner. Ms. Becker totally understands type 2 diabetes, and has been extremely helpful in my understanding of it too. How I wish I had had this book when I was first diagnosed - even just the title of the first chapter "It's not your fault" is so important - it allowed me to let go of some of the guilt and self reproach I had. No one ever told me that before! This book is *essential* for all newly diagnosed Type 2's and for the NOT SO NEWLY diagnosed too! You will have a whole new understanding of type 2 diabetes as well as empathetic support and clear information about how to help manage your diabetes. A great book!
Book Review: If you can only buy 1 book on Type 2 Diabetes - THIS IS IT! Summary: 5 StarsAs a long standing DMer (Type 2 going on weird) who has done lots of research and reading on this disease in both clinical and popular health books and the web, I am very impressed with this book. I got a copy on my recent visit to the USA from the UK.Gretchen Becker's Book has brought together so much solid information and has achieved the near impossible, of presenting it in a very readable style. The book is well laid out so that if still reeling from the shock of the diagnosis, (and who doesn't react like that?), the basics are there right from the start. At your own pace you can add in and read more depth and scientific facts to help you live and manage the disease. This is important as we, the people with diabetes, are the ones who live with it rather than the doctors, nurses and dietitians who help us. We need to be as informed as possible to manage a disease which can have devastating complications if uncontrolled. Thankfully, Gretchen also leavens this mixture with her dry sense of humour - vital to coping with any chronic disease. She shows us that there is life after diagnosis and it can be fun. As a scientist, sheep farmer and science editor Gretchen knows the disease from the inside as she has type 2. A major plus for this book is that it also addresses the psychological consequences of living with a chronic disease. Rick Mendosa's chapter on Web resources to research DM (Diabetes Mellitus)is an excellent introduction to some of the best reliable sites online. I would strongly recommend this to any person with DM whether Type 1 or 2, Diabetologist,CDE, family practitioner, nurse or family member... After 23 years of living with disease, I learned much by reading this book. Thank you, Gretchen. I will certainly be recommending it to my local Diabetes Clinic and GP practice back in the UK and will be giving it as Christmas presents to a couple of friends. Go buy it and get a better handle on your DM!
Book Review: Don't try controlling Type 2 w/o the knowledge in this book. Summary: 5 StarsThis book provides the underlying foundation of knowledge that anyone with Type 2 needs before they can even begin to develop a plan of action for managing this disease. There is no other disease that depends so much on the patient as does Type 2. This book provides you with the tools to make informed decisions about your personal plan of attack to prevent long-term complications and also points out how your diagnoses may actually be a blessing in disguise. This book doesn't preach it's own "cures", but simply provides information and sources of additional knowledge. Read this book before all others to sort out the facts from the hype. JR
