Book Review: 2.5 stars maybe?
Summary: 2 Stars
This is supposed to be a classic, so I read it. Despite all the negative reviews, I think that given the decade it was written in, it's not that bad. It wasn't great either, though--the heroine drove me up the wall with her Cinderella pushover complex and the characters tended to be two-dimensional.
The notorious rape scene in the beginning was kind of repugnant, but readers with the negative reviews fail to cite the rest of the book where Brandon (the hero) redeems himself. In fact, he's surprisingly noble afterward--Woodiwiss makes him so loving and kind, and you see that he'd do anything to protect the heroine, that you can't stay mad at him anymore for what he did in the beginning of the book.
All in all, an ok read. It tended to drag at the middle and Heather the heroine really got on my nerves. Woodiwiss spent way too many paragraphs describing how alluring and beautiful she was, and I kind of got the point--there could be no other reason (and none *was* stated) Brandon falls in love with her! She had no redeeming quality except for her looks.
Plotwise, it had a bit of a mystery element at the end; but I think it was mostly the characterization that hacked the stars off this book.
