Book Review: Excellent History of a Famous Warbird!

Though it is probably the most recognized warplane EVER, the Fokker Triplane hasn't been the subject of all that many books. One of the very best - if not the best ever - volumes published on Tony Fokker's inimitable fighter is this wonderful history done by Alex Imrie for Arms and Armour Press in 1992.
The 'best ever' claim is made for several reasons. First off, Alex Imrie's name on a WW I aviation publication is akin to 'Rolls Royce' on an automobile. Imrie was an expert on German aviation in the Great War and wrote a number of well-received books on German fighter units, bombers, aces and so on. Secondly, as it relates to the Fokker Triplane, he actually knew and was friends with a score of Tripe pilots and ground crew. Lastly, his many other German aviation contacts ensured the accuracy of his work.
THE FOKKER TRIPLANE is a fairly slim book, only 128 pages long. Yet Imrie packs a great deal of authoritative and entertaining information and illustrations within those pages. After a short chapter on Fokker fighters, Imrie discusses the cantilever wing, the early Fokker Triplane models, its first operational use, structural problems, service with JG I, II and III, the triplanes Richtofen used, insignia, armament, maintenance and so on. Numerous appendices provide additional interesting information. The informative, eminently readable text is complimented by over 160 rare photographs, diagrams, three-views and maps.
World War I fighter enthusiasts will enjoy THE FOKKER TRIPLANE. Impeccably researched, it is a well-written and well-illustrated guide to that most distinctive fighter. It, is in all likelihood, is the best single-volume history of the Fokker Triplane ever published. Highly recommended.
