Book Reviews of The Forever War

Book Review: Forever Recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

Amazing book. Couldn't put it down! I got it on a Thursday and it was finished by Sunday. As you read it you'll think it's a fairly basic story, but after it's over and you sit and think about it you'll realize the depth and ingenious of the story. It's simply brilliant, I don't want to spoil any of the story but believe me it's worth a read. It's not terribly long so even if you're on the fence just get it, it's not going to kill you to read it.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes war/sci-fi/good stories.

Book Review: Forever War well worth reading
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best SF. Reads fast because it's so real as well as creative.
The GI-type humor is (really) LOL. The combat situations against a truly alien species are fast paced, leaving the reader with a sense of having actually survived enemy engagement. You will definately want to read Forever Peace, and you will not be disappointed. Both are keepers, which is why you don't run across them in used-book stores. Enjoy

Book Review: Forever to wonder...
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book sometime between 1977 and 1983. I'm very sorry that I lost the copy I read, because I believe it was different from current editions. I don't recall anything about commune life, but I do remember Mandela's mother getting ill, and having no access to medical care. Does anyone else remember the story this way?

I loved the story. I'm listening to the Audible version and am disappointed. The reader sounds like he's telling a bedtime story from the comfort of his armchair, near a hearth. When I read the book, it was full of blood and sweat and fear and boredom, strange smells and claustrophobia. May I recommend "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason?

Book Review: Forget that it's sci-fi
Summary: 5 Stars

The best war novel of any kind. The fact that it's sci-fi just allows you to look at it without bias toward your view of history on any particular conflict and focus on the people and their experiences.

Book Review: Future (and Forever) War
Summary: 5 Stars

It's interesting that customers who bought this book tended to buy Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Both are about interstellar-scale war and portray the brutality and military mindset. But what really stuck with me about The Forever War was the distance in time that the main character traveled until he was one of a couple survivors. The scene that jumps out at me, though, was the slicing-up of the main character's female buddy during a malfunction in the "bunk" apparatus aboard a troop ship.

Joe has a straightfoward writing style with lots of grit. Reminds me of Roger Zelazny without the poetry. This is a great read for the science fiction fan who likes a moderate amount of science, no "fantasy," and some realistic views of the military from the grunt's perspective.
