Book Review: A Master of Fact over Fiction
Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, this book is a work of historical research, not a fictional invention. Yes it has a cast of characters, but this is a recount of what real people actually did and said and wrote in the 1930s, 1940s and builds upon those in the earlier centuries when the great Dutch painters Vermeer, Hals and Rembrandt were working. It is a fabulous and exciting book, exploring the greatest painting hoax of any time, and the roles of the people who were actually involved. Anyone truly interested in great art and art history should read it. The writing about "experts" and how they psychologically trap themselves into believing only what they wish to believe is priceless, and has implications beyond art, especially in our current time of business failure when leaders were "blind" to Madoff and others who where perpetrating incredible financial hoaxes. I loved this book. It was extremely well done, from start to finish, and I could not put it down. Thank you Mr. Dolnick wherever you are for a wonderful story that is the more arresting because it was true.
