THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT IS THE FIRST WORD THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN ONE FOLLOWS THROUGH THROUGH WITH THE STORY OF THE HELPLESSLY BESOTTED CHARLES . THE STORY OWES A GREAT DEAL TO THE MAGNIFICENT VISUALIZATION OF THE COUNTY OF DORSET, ESPECIALLY THE AUTHOR'S HOME TOWN OF LYME REGIS. SARAH WOODRUFF EPITOMISES THE QUINTESSENENTIAL SUBTLE TEMPTRESS WHOSE GREATEST ATTRACTION LIES IN HER DARK PAST AND HELPLESSNESS. IT IS AN EXCEEDINGLY CLEVER BLEND OF PLAYING THE VICTIM AND THE SORCERESS WHO REELS IN POOR CHARLES WHO OBVIOUSLY FINDS NO CHARM IN THE PRIM AND PROPER ERNESTINA. ALSO THE NATURE OF MAN WANTING TO PLAY PROTECTOR AT HIS OWN COST EVEN IS BRILLIANTLY PORTRAYED. ALL IN ALL THIS BOOK BEARS BEAUTIFUL AND UNSURPASSED TESTIMONY TO THE AGE OLD FACT THAT EACH TIME MAN FALLS PREY TO THE SIN OF FORBIDDEN FRUIT HE PAYS A HEAVY PRICE FOR IT. NEVER FOUND ANOTHER BOOK TO COMPARE WITH IT.
