Book Reviews of The FrontBook Review: A Great read! Summary: 5 Stars
The Front is a great read. Cornwell weaves many threads that come together seamlessly in the concluding chapters. It is amazing how so many apparently disconnected incidents, or tossed off lines of dialogue-in the end-are really germane to the plot.
Her characters are carefully drawn. The physical descriptions, as well as the personality traits, are rendered down to the smallest detail. Even a character who exasperates or irritates (think Monique) has a vulnerability that enables the reader to have sympathy, if not affection, for her.
I'm intrigued by Patricia Cornwell's characterizations, settings, and plots. I've tried to winnow it down to which is one is her real strengths? Have come to the conclusion she's a master of all!!
Book Review: A Summer Time Must! Summary: 5 Stars
The Front is the second novella (short novel) following At Risk by Patricia Cornwell. This series unlike the Scarpetta series is more of a fast paced, page turner that is great for summer or on the go reading.
That being said, this book is not lacking in character development or complexity. It is just a shorter story which combines and old crime with a current one. The characters are unique and I enjoyed their relationships as well as the main story. Highly recommended.
Book Review: A Superior Piece of Work! Summary: 5 Stars
Patricia Cornwell does it again! She creates a new series that grabs the attention of the readers from the beginning pages. I couldn't imagine finding characters that I would care as much about as I did the Scarpetta crew...however, here they are in "The Front". I enjoyed this crime novel and finished it in an afternoon. This was a terrific sequel to "At Risk" I look forward to learning more about the antics of Nana, Monique and of course Win.
Book Review: A good book to read while you're waiting for "Scarpetta". Summary: 4 Stars
This is the sequel to At Risk. Many readers are saying stick with the Scarpetta series; I say this is a good little mystery while you're waiting for the new Scarpetta book to be released. Yes, it is short - it was written in a serial novella form just like At Risk. Personally, I like the shortness because although I love to read, I am a very slow reader. I think The Front may be even better than it's predecessor (of course it's been two years since I read At Risk - mostly I just remember that story having a great twist). At any rate, this series is much better than the Andy Basil series Cornwell did - those stories and characters were just plain silly. I think The Front has just the right amount of humor mixed in and serves as a good commentary on current events and political feelings. In my opinion, Cornwell does quite well in this little piece and it matches the quality of her recent Scarpetta books. I love the characters of Win aka Geronimo, Lamont and Stump; I hope to see more of them. Now that I'm finished with The Front, I'm ready for Scarpetta (Kay Scarpetta) this Fall.
Book Review: A good read, but leaves you wanting more... Summary: 4 Stars
This was my first book in this series. I am an avid Patricia Cornwell fan, and I love Kaye Scarpetta and friends. I enjoyed "The Front". It was light reading compared to the Scarpetta books. The characters are fresh, fun and interesting. I love the mysterious air about Win. Nana is so realistic, I wish I coud visit her. You can't help but love to hate Monique Lamont. Stump is a newcomer I'd like to get to know better. I liked the many twists and turns and the eventual wrap-up of all the story lines.
I think Ms. Cornwell could take some additional time (and pages) to develop the characters a little more. Win wrapped up the Janie Brolin murder a little too quickly. He speculated on the facts a bit too much, without proof. His Cal Tradd theory also lacked solid evidence. The McClure/Raggedy Ann storyline was a little confusing. I'd also like to read more about Monique's tragic past. More about her feelings. And more about Win's learning disability. Overall, "The Front" was a very good read. I'd like to go back and read "At Risk", and would like to see future episodes in this series.
