Book Review: A book about nothing...

This book starts out promisingly. But after a while, the sarcastic wit and meanness of spirit of the narrating character just won't hold up the whole 770 pages. None of the major characters are likable; it's impossible to see any chemistry between the two main characters, John and Susan (though we're told there's chemistry aplenty); the history we're given about the characters is a lot, but somehow not enough to create actual character development. We're treated to endless shopping trips, drives through the country, restaurants, private clubs, drinking, sexless sex, and snooty people. Actions that in a normal mystery/thriller would lead to something exciting are all dead ends...leading only back to yet another toddy at home.
One of the potentially actionable side plots, the Iranian traitor who owns the estate the two main characters live within and who fears assassination, comes to absolutely nothing. Lots of appetizers, no meal. Mr. DeMille writes very well, and is very readable. I just kept hoping in vain that something would actually happen. The thing that John and Susan fear throughout most of theses 770 pages (or at least John -- Susan, a rather unsympathetic character, is too "high-born" to have any real awareness of the less savory parts of life) winds up in a couple of pages at the very end.
In sum, The Gate House is like the old TV show, Friends - the show about nothing. The Gate House is a book about nothing.
