Book Reviews of The Gate House

Book Review: A bad re-hash of The Gold Coast
Summary: 1 Stars

Instead of wasting any time on The Gate House, just read The Gold Coast again. All Demille does in the new book is re-tell and re-tell and re-tell the events of the previous book. Susan (the wife) is even more annoying, but this time she is also boring. There is no plot, just a boring bad guy who doesn't even do anything until the last few pages, and that must have been pasted in by an exasperated junior editor. This book was a huge huge disappointment from an author who has previously written several gripping tales.

Book Review: A bit like bad sex...
Summary: 5 Stars

About fifty years ago the dynamic young New York City Mayor John Lindsay likened something or other to sex... as being "good even whan it's bad." As a typically devoted DeMille reader I rushed out and bought my long awaited copy of The Gate House the day it was released, and neglected almost all other reading and other priorities as I devoted full attention to this sequel to his literary triumph, The Gold Coast. Other reviewers who have critically indicated that the action here is developed more slowly than in most DeMille stories seem to have underappreciated the joy of savoring the contrast of protagonist John Sutter's private thoughts to his spoken words, which is where much of the fun is in this book throughout, page after page, as he slowly escalates the tension building toward what we all know will be an explosive series of totally unpredictable (but always stunning) climaxes. If this book falls short of your expectations, you didn't take enough time to "smell the roses" along the way. DeMille's books are like your children, or your dogs, perhaps... each different in personality and texture from the others, but you love them all equally. As I have felt with every one of the fifteen or so books of his that I've read, The Gate House left me with a kind of "post partum depression" when it was over, knowing that it will likely be another thirty months or so before he can produce another story. One trend I have noticed in his last several books is that DeMille seems to have given more thought to developing his characters and storylines in such a fashion that they will translate readily into terrific films. Bring 'em on, and the sooner the better!

Book Review: A bone with no meat
Summary: 2 Stars

I generally like books by this author, but this one is not very good. Weak and extremely bloated story, filled with redundant sarcasm, and self-absorbed characters, makes for an ardorous read.

Book Review: A book about nothing
Summary: 1 Stars

Publishers Weekly said that the book "takes its' time getting anywhere. What an understatement! I'm on page 578 of a 678 page book and next to nothing has happened. Unless I want to count the "hero" bonking his ex-wife five times a day and being sarcastic at least 3 times a page. My advice - don't waste your time on this piece of self-indulgent trash. I'm sorry I did.

Book Review: A great follow-up to The gold Coast
Summary: 5 Stars

The Gold Coast was one of my all time favorite books. Nothing DeMille ever wrote has measured up to it. I read the book twice and listened to the audiobook. When I discovered that The Gate House was a new sequel, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

I thought it was great. It was wonderful to remember all that happened in the Gold Coast and to meet all the characters again in a continued story. The Gold Coast was one of those books that you never wanted it to end. Well now it hasn't. If only it could still continue past The Gate House.

I had read a long time ago that a movie was going to be made of The Gold Coast, but it never happened. Now would be the perfect time to make a movie combining both books. I could read about the Stanhopes, the Sutters and the Bellarosas forever, and I would love to see all those people and their gold coast properties portrayed in a movie.
